How It Works

How to use this online inclinometer

Three steps cover almost every measurement.

01

Grant sensor access

Tap Start — your browser will ask permission to read motion and orientation data. Nothing leaves your device.

02

Lay the phone flat

Place it on the surface you want to check. The bubble and readout update live as you move it.

03

Zero and read

Press Zero to set the current tilt as your reference, then read pitch and roll to the tenth of a degree.

Features

Built for real angle-measuring work

A focused digital level — not a bloated app with logins and ads.

Real-time pitch & roll

Accelerometer and gyroscope data is read continuously, so the display tracks your hand the instant you tilt.

Zero calibration

Set any surface as your 0° reference — perfect for comparing two surfaces or cancelling out a camera bump.

Audio feedback

Turn on beep-when-level in settings and check alignment by ear, without staring at the screen.

100% on-device

Sensor data is processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared.

Pro Tips

Get a more accurate reading

Two simple techniques cancel out most of a phone's built-in sensor error.

180° 10°

180° rotation method

Cancel out sensor bias by averaging two opposite readings.

  1. Place the phone on the surface and note the reading (e.g. 8°).
  2. Rotate it 180° in the same spot and take a second reading (e.g. 10°).
  3. Average the two: (8 + 10) ÷ 2 = 9° — your corrected angle.
0° Zeroed 10° diff.

Zero-point calibration

Set the current surface as your new 0° baseline.

  1. Lay the device on your reference surface and let it settle.
  2. Press Zero — the current tilt becomes your new baseline.
  3. Move to the target surface; the readout now shows the difference.

Compensate for a camera bump

Cancel out the tilt a raised camera lens creates on a flat surface.

  1. Place the phone down — a camera bump often shows a false few-degree tilt.
  2. Press Zero to treat that tilted rest position as 0°.
  3. Every reading from here on is measured relative to true flat.

Use Cases

When this inclinometer helps

Anywhere you'd normally reach for a spirit level or clinometer.

Construction & carpentry

Check walls are vertical, floors are level, and rafters are cut to the right roof pitch.

Solar panel installs

Set panels to the optimal tilt for your latitude and season to maximize output.

DIY & home improvement

Hang frames straight, level furniture, and set up appliances so they don't vibrate.

Photography

Level a tripod before a shoot — critical for architectural and panoramic work.

Vehicles & RVs

Check suspension angles or level a caravan so fridges and drains work correctly.

Plumbing & drainage

Confirm pipes hold a consistent gentle slope to keep water flowing the right way.

FAQ

Online inclinometer FAQ

Straight answers about accuracy, privacy, and using this tool.

How do I use this online inclinometer?+
Grant sensor access, press Start Measuring, and lay your device on the surface. Pitch (X-axis) and roll (Y-axis) update in real time. Use Zero to set a reference point.
How accurate is this inclinometer?+
Accuracy depends on your device's accelerometer. It's more than enough for DIY and hobby work; for certified precision, use a calibrated spirit level.
Is my data private?+
Yes. All sensor data is processed directly in your browser — nothing is sent to our servers, and no measurement is stored.
What can I use it for?+
Solar installs, construction, carpentry, DIY, photography, vehicle leveling, plumbing, and any task that needs an angle or slope check.
How do I compensate for a camera bump?+
Lay the phone down, note the false reading, then press Zero — the tilted rest position becomes your new 0°.
Do I need to install an app?+
No. This runs entirely in your mobile browser — no download, no account, no app store.
